Why Dogs Know When You’re About to Leave (Even Before You Do)

You haven’t even thought about leaving home yet. Your keys are still hanging up, your purse is safely tucked, and your shoes are still waiting for you.

Somehow, dogs know when you’re about to leave.

Your dog is watching you closely and maybe acting a bit differently or more clingy.

How does your dog know what’s about to happen, even before you start getting ready?
Your dog doesn’t have access to your calendar. But it might almost be magical.

Your Dog Is Tracking Your Every Move

No obvious hints are needed for your dog.

Your furry buddy is watching for the pre-leaving routine.

It’s the tiny, often not thought-about actions that your dog knows are a precursor to you leaving. Think of:

  • Shutting down your laptop
  • Closing your blinds
  • Putting on makeup
  • Changing your clothes
  • Putting your purse and items by the door
  • Closing certain doors (so your dog doesn’t explore too much)

Your dog recognizes all these actions as a pattern.

Once your pup sees the pattern starting, he knows what’s coming. You’re about to leave.

My dog, Henry, knows that when I set things by the door and put on makeup, I’m about to leave.

Dogs Notice What You Don’t

Your dog is an observant detective. Subtle things are red flags to your pup, including:

  • More of a rushed pace
  • A difference in your vocal tone
  • Moving from the bathroom to the bedroom numerous times

These could be almost unnoticeable to you. But your dog is in observation mode all the time.

Your Dog Can Smell That You’re About To Leave

But it’s not just what’s seen. It’s what your dog can smell that reveals your plans.

Your scent changes as you move and get ready to leave. Your dog’s nose can pick up this change from your:

  • Stress
  • Anticipation
  • Hormone change

This means your dog picks up on visual and scent patterns that indicate you are about to leave.

Why Your Dog Reacts Before You Leave

When your dog recognizes that the leave pattern is in motion, they react accordingly. Your dog may:

  • Hide, pace, or whine
  • Shadow or follow you
  • Sit by the door, ready to go with you
  • Block you from moving easily from one room to another

While some dogs get excited, other dogs get anxious about you leaving.

One thing that’s for certain is that your dog isn’t guessing. He knows you’re about to leave.

My dog, Henry, will follow me, then sit by the door thinking that I will take him.

Can You Outsmart Your Dog?

In this case, it’s probably not possible.

Your dog isn’t just picking up one cue. Rather, he’s seeing and smelling the patterned sequence that says you’re leaving.

If your dog gets anxious when you leave, then try:

  • Changing your routine
  • Take a few short trips (5-10 minutes)
  • Keep your departure low-key

When you mix things up a bit, it makes it less predictable for your dog.

But some dogs, like my dog, Henry, can get anxious when left alone. These are the tricks I use to keep him calm, even if I’m gone for a few hours.

The Bottom Line on Why Dogs Know You’re Leaving

Henry is like other dogs know when you’re about to leave

While it may seem like your dog is psychic, he’s not.

Your pup just knows you and your patterns very well.

In other words, your dog can predict your moves based on your routine, visual observations, and scent cues. The pattern tells your buddy that you are leaving even before you’ve given it much thought.
In a nutshell, or doggie cookie, yes, your dog knows when you’re leaving.

Fun Dog Fact:
Dogs are very good at pattern recognition. They can associate actions to events. That means those pre-departure cues are a huge giveaway for your dog. Your pup will always know when you’re leaving.
