What Does A Dog Side Eye Really Mean (Probably More Than You Think)

You know that look. When your pup shoots you the infamous dog side eye, it says everything.

It can be funny, a bit mischievous, and somewhat judgmental. But what does your dog’s side eye really mean?

It’s a Form of Communication

Dogs often use body language and cues to express their feelings. The side eye, or whale eye, occurs when you see the whites of their eyes and they look sideways at you.

This is your dog’s way of saying, “I’m not really okay with this.”

The side eye might be flashed at you when:

  • You hug your dog, and they didn’t ask for it
  • You tell them it’s time to leave the park
  • You ask them to come inside from playing
  • You introduce something new or confusing, like a new fur kid or person
  • You tell your pup it’s time to go to the vet

It’s really not your dog back talking, but rather your pup trying to tell you that they don’t like or understand what is happening.

It Can Mean “Please Back Off”

Often the side eye is a warning. It might be followed by a growl or bark. These signs are all expressions that your pup isn’t comfortable with the situation.

Sometimes, It’s Just Focus

But not all side eye is communication-centered. When your dog looks quickly at you without moving, it can mean something else. For example, when you grab their leash or head for the cookie cabinet, they may quickly give you the side eye.

This is your dog’s way of saying, “I’m keeping an eye on the situation.”

Why It Looks So Dramatic

Henry gives a dog side eye while resting with his heartbeat toy

Your dog has the ability to be very expressive with facial muscles and side eye looks. But we dog parents are also good at seeing emotions in our pups. I know my dog, Henry, can show me a side eye when it’s close to dinner time. I always take that expression as, “Chef, my dinner is due now!”

Sometimes, with their expressions and our projections, the side eye does feel personal and a bit judgmental. It might seem like the behavior is full of attitude.

Fun Dog Fact: Your dog knows you. He’s good at reading your expression and vocal tones. Your pup knows when your face and voice are happy, sad, mad, sick. That means your pup’s side eye could be a reaction to your mood.

The next time your dog flashes you a side eye, don’t feel judged. Instead, be honored that they are trying to communicate with you. Also, maybe reconsider the situation and give your pup a hug when they want it.
