The Sweetest Valentine’s Day Traditions Involving Dogs

Valentine’s Day traditions involving dogs are truly the sweetest. The holiday isn’t just for humans. Many dogs get their own treats, toys, and even a heart-shaped cookie or two.

Including dogs in this all hearts day isn’t as modern as you might think. Dog parents have been celebrating special days with their pups for generations.

From Working Partners to Beloved Valentine’s Day Traditions Involving Dogs

For most of history, dogs were valued mainly for guarding homes, herding animals, and helping with hunts. Not surprisingly, dogs often held a special place in the household. Victorian England popularized elevating pets to family members. This meant giving furry friends gifts when celebrating a special day.

When Pets Became Part of the Holiday Market

By the early 20th century, big business decided they should hop on the pet train. Soon, they stocked stores with gifts specially for our four-legged friends.

This meant it was even easier for dog parents to celebrate Valentine’s Day and other special holidays with their pups. Meanwhile, companies cashed in on our furry obsession. Today, pet stores have more than covered the February holiday with heart-shaped toys and treats.

Some of the most popular ways dog parents celebrate this cupid-induced holiday include:

  • Special treats or homemade dog-safe cookies
  • New toys (often red, pink, or heart-shaped)
  • Extra walks, adventures, or cuddle time
  • Doggie date with a photo shoot
Fun Dog Valentine’s Day Fact:
More than half of pet owners buy their buddies a gift for Valentine’s Day. That’s big business and proved to be a smart move for companies to include pets in the holiday.

Whichever way you celebrate Valentine’s Day, remember your dog doesn’t need those fancy heart-shaped toys and treats. Valentine’s with your pup isn’t about all those fancy gifts. It’s about celebrating the day with one companion who thinks you’re amazing even when you don’t do your hair, crawl out of your sweatpants, or put on makeup. I’m grateful for my dog, Henry, loving me despite my day or the way I look. That’s the best kind of love!
