Who hasn’t heard the “awoo” sound of a dog seeming to serenade the moon? The sound cuts through the night like a red alarm fire.
What Does a Dog’s Howl Mean?
There can be many reasons for a dog howling. Wolves howl as a form of their social media. They might be saying something like “I’m here, where are you?” Or even “Great snacks in the Brown’s garbage tonight.”
Why Do Domestic Dogs Howl?
Domestic dogs have maintained the howling communication instinct. Even if they are just sending a message to the dog two houses down about their dinner or a few acres away about a squirrel invasion. Heck, my childhood dog, Tag, would howl for hours. Apparently, he loved to boast about his day.
Why Do Dogs Howl at The Moon?

However, when it tends to be quieter in the evening or when you’re home, you notice things more, like dogs howling. Once you add in the spooky folklore of werewolves, you have a great myth!
What Breeds are Good Dog Howlers?

Some dog breeds, like Huskies, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, Dachshunds, Malamutes, and I have to add Jack Russell mixes (for Tag), are champion howlers. Other dogs never venture into howling, like my dog, Henry, who doesn’t even know how to howl. I guess he doesn’t care for doggie social media. But Henry does alert me that the coyotes are howling.
What Should I Do When My Dog Howls?
Next time the moon is bright and your dog is belting out a round of “awoos” don’t worry, your pup isn’t trying to summon otherworldly powers. Your buddy is just enjoying catching up with the furry social news in the area.
Fun Dog Howling Fact: Wolves and coyotes will generally lift their heads to howl. This doesn't connect them with the moon, but rather helps project their vocals further. Smart, isn’t it?
